The working principle of a moisture meter depends on the type of meter – Pin-type meter and Pinless meter. Pin-type meters use electrical resistance to measure moisture content by passing an electric current between two sharp, uninsulated pins. The pins are pressed into the material being tested to measure moisture content at different levels of penetration. It is useful for soft materials like paper, boxes, corrugated boxes, etc. On the other hand, a pinless moisture meter, also known as a non-invasive moisture meter, works on the principle of radio frequencies or capacitance to detect moisture in a material without making any physical contact with it.
