Melt flow rate is an important property of polymers that will help to determine the melting point under the application of the standard weight. This necessary parameter will provide you with accurate information about the melting point of polymers under a standard weight. To make it easy for the polymer product manufacturers to conduct the MFI test on materials, we have designed a high-quality melt flow index tester. The MFI test is one of the simple quality tests that will be conducted on the materials like granules or flakes when heated in a barrel at a specified temperature. The melted fluid is then forced out of a capillary die with the help of a piston loaded with dead weights. Here in this blog, we are going to provide you with information about how you can easily maintain a melt flow index tester designed by the experts at Testronix. We will also discuss brief information about the Testronix MFI tester and its highly advanced features.

Introduction about Testronix melt flow index tester

Melt flow rate (MFR) is a critical property for polymers that affects the processing ability, moldability, and ultimate use of the polymer. Testing MFR is essential to ensure correct processing, and to make sure that the resulting product has the desired properties. The higher the MFR, the faster the material will melt. MFR is important for materials that will be used in applications that require high-quality products, such as injection molding and extrusion.

With Testronix melt flow index tester, one can easily measure the melt flow properties of the materials and ensure that accurate product will be delivered to the customers with ease. The physical and chemical properties of the materials can be analyzed on the basis of the melt flow rate of the polymers. This high-quality lab testing instrument is based on a digital display that will let users view accurate testing results. This lab testing instrument works on a microprocessor-based PID temperature controller which will range from 0 degrees to 400 degrees Celsius. Besides this, Testronix MFI tester has been made in accordance with industrial standards that includes (ASTM D 1238, IS 2267, IS-2530, and IS 10810). You can easily improve the quality of plastics with a melt flow index tester.

How to measure the melt flow rate of polymers?

One of the most important factors in the production of polymers is the melt flow rate. This is a measure of how quickly a polymer melts and can be used in various applications such as molding and casting. In order to accurately measure melt flow rate, you will need to use a high-quality lab testing instrument like a melt flow index tester that is helpful in calculating the melt flow index of the materials with ease.

If you want to conduct a melt flow index test on the materials, then you must follow the steps mentioned below.

  • Start the machine by plugging the mains socket of the machine into a 3-pin 15 amp socket.
  • The PID controller will show some readings on the PV & SV. Set the SV value on the PID controller along with test duration timing on the digital timer.
  • After setting the temperature and timer, turn the heater on by pressing the heater switch. Wait for the PV value to reach the value of the SV display.
  • After the required temperature for the test has been attained, fill the barrel of the machine with the plastic granules you want to test. Poke the granules with the plunger after they are inserted into the barrel. This will ensure close packing of the granules and eliminate the air between the granules.
  • Once the PV and SV values are the same, place the plunger provided with the machine along with the dead weight on it into the barrel. . After placement of the plunger, there will be extrudate coming out of the die/orifice placed in the lower end of the barrel.
  • When the time cycle on the digital timer will complete, the cutter will automatically cut the extrudate from the barrel. This can also be done manually if the machine is set on manual operation.
  • The first extrudate that is cut by the knife is discarded. The extrudate cut afterward should be considered for testing. Weigh the extrudate cut from the barrel using a digital balance. This weight will be used for calculating the Melt Flow Index of the sample.

After following these steps, you can calculate the MFI value of the sample with the use of the formula mentioned below:

MFI = Weight of sample in gm/ 10 min.

In this way, you can easily conduct melt flow tests on materials and determine their melt flow rate of them. You can read about the tips to get accurate results from the melt flow index tester.
